Ann Howells

Ann Howells edited Illya’s Honey beginning in 1999, first in print, then four more years online, alternating issues with a co-editor (www.IllyasHoney.com). Her publications include the books Under a Lone Star (Village Books Press, 2016) illustrated by Dallas artist, J. Darrell Kirkley; Cattlemen & Cadillacs, an anthology of D/FW poets which she edited (Dallas Poets Community Press, 2016); So Long As We Speak Their Names, poems about watermen who harvest Chesapeake Bay (Kelsay Books, 2019); and Painting the Pinwheel Sky, persona poems in the voices of Van Gogh and his contemporaries (Assure Press, 2020). She also has four chapbooks including: Softly Beating Wings, which won the 2017 William D. Barney Memorial Chapbook Contest (Blackbead Books, 2017) and Black Crow in Flight which was published as Editor’s Choice in the 2007 Main Street Rag Chapbook Competition.

Named a “Distinguished Poet of Dallas” by the city in 2001, she served as President of Dallas Poets Community (501-c-3) for four years and as Treasurer for many more. She is called upon frequently to judge poetry and chapbook contests. Over 700 of her poems have appeared in small press and university journals including Spillway, THEMA, and Sentence in the US, as well as Magma (England) and Crannog (Ireland) abroad. Ann lives in Carrollton, Texas with her husband, daughter, and two extremely spoiled rescue dogs. Outside of her poetry interests, she spends time traveling Texas photographing the fascinating architecture of its 253 county courthouses (and former courthouses in many counties). She still has almost 100 courthouses to go.
